SEPTEMBER KEY POINTS


TREND ESTIMATES

• The trend estimate of turnover for the Australian Retail and Hospitality/Services series increased by 0.7% in September 2007. This follows revised increases of 0.7% in both August and July 2007.
• In September 2007, all states and territories had an increase in the trend estimate. The largest increase occurred in Queensland (+1.0%).

• The seasonally adjusted estimate of turnover for the Australian Retail and Hospitality/Services series increased by 0.8% in September 2007. This follows a revised increase of 0.8% in August 2007 and an increase of 0.8% in July 2007.
• All states and territories except Tasmania (-1.1%) and the Australian Capital Territory (-0.3%) had increases in the seasonally adjusted estimate. The largest increase occurred in Queensland (+1.2%).

• In original terms, Australian turnover decreased by 1.3% in September 2007 compared with August 2007. Chains and other large retailers (which are completely enumerated) decreased by 0.7%, while the estimate for 'smaller' retailers (the sampled units) decreased by 2.1%.
• Australian turnover increased by 7.3% in September 2007 compared with September 2006. Chains and other large retailers increased by 9.2%, while 'smaller' retailers increased by 4.9%.

• The trend volume measure of turnover increased by 1.1% in the September quarter 2007. This follows a 1.2% increase in the June quarter 2007. In seasonally adjusted terms, the volume measure increased by 1.9% in the September quarter 2007.

REVISIONS

There have been some revisions to August 2007 data due to reporting errors. These revisions affect Food retailing, all states; Household good retailing, South Australia; Other retailing, Victoria and Hospitality and services, Queensland.
